Do you want to become a motivational speaker?

Motivational speaking is a fun, profitable and fulfilling way to make a difference in the world.  But you don't have to be a celebrity or professional athlete to become a motivational speaker.  All you need is a genuine desire to help others, someone to point you in the right direction and a willingness to invest the time it takes to develop yourself and your message.

Here are six keys to help you become a motivational speaker:

1. Be yourself.

Often, people decide to become a motivational speaker because they are inspired by another motivational speaker.  But instead of developing their own unique style, they make the mistake of trying to patten themselves after another motivational speaker.  If you want to be successful, it's important to be yourself and develop your own unique style and approach to motivational speaking.

2. Tell your story.

Your story is what makes you unique in the marketplace.  What's your story?  Have you achieved success in a particular area of life?  Have you overcome obstacles to succeed?  What lessons have you learned?  What can you share about your own journey to motivate and inspire others?

3. Pick a niche.

If you want to become a motivational speaker and succeed quickly, its important to develop a specialty, a niche.  For example, you could become a motivational speaker who specializes in working with sales people in insurance or real estate field.  Pick a niche and you'll succeed a lot faster.

4. Create your own products.

When you first become a motivational speaker, chances are, you're not going to have a book or CDs to sell after your speeches.  Make this a priority.  50% to 80% of your income will eventually come from the sale of your motivational speaking resources.  Start by recording all your presentations.  Turn the recordings into CDs.  Hire someone to transcribe your best talk.  Then, organize and expand it into a book.  You can find people to help you at guru.com.

5. Learn the business.

There is a very real and lucrative business of motivational speaking.  And if you to make money as a motivational speaker, it's important to learn the business.  There are courses and even a national association to help.  I suggest that you start by picking  a mentor, someone who is a successful and willing to help you become a motivational speaker through the courses or training they offer.

6. Get started now.

Lots of people say they want to become a motivational speaker, but very few take action.  Take action.  Outline your first speech.  Create a one page overview about you and what you have to offer.  Call local companies.  Book your first talk.  Its easier than you think.
